After the last opportunity to leave your vote is over, the results of this survey are presented at a glance. The one and only question of this survey was related to your outlook and future development of sustainable and efficient supply chains. Regarding the high cost-saving potential of lean and green supply chains that is mentioned in a large amount of scientific papers, this survey was adressed to business people.
As scientific papers estimate a cost-saving potential of almost 20 percent for holistic environmental supply chain management in cooperation with suppliers and customers, the feedback of the survey participants was very interesting. The results shows a similar estimation of future supply chain potential, as 45 percent of the participants see competitive advantages for companies in case of a successful implementation of sustainable and efficient supply chains. In opposite to that, 22 percent rate that sustainable supply chain design is related to higher costs. A minority of the survey participants answered this development will lead to an increased corporate image (18 percent) or reduced greenhouse gas emissions (13 percent).
The last point is quite important as most people connect "green logistics" and "greenhouse gas emissions" with each other. It seems that most participants are very familiar with the terms supply chain management, sustainability as well as the high cost-saving potential of efficient logistics networks. From my personal point of view, this should be adressed to the top management of divisionally-organized companies. All the potential described in this result often gets lost within a company between its different departments.
