PwC published their annual "Global Supply Chain Survey" for 2013. Main result: In times of unsecure future economy development, the optimization of supply chains in terms of profitability attracts high management attention. Sustainability hasn't yet been recognized as a potential competitive advantage why investments in this area of supply chain management will just slightly increase until 2015. Another important fact is the decreasing performance gap between industrialized and developping countries.

The survey clearly shows the competitive advantage of top performing companies. 20% of investigated companies with the best supply chain management achieve in comparison with low performers a tremendously better financial result. The return on sales of top perfomers (15.6%) is twice as much as those of low performers (7.3%). In contrast sustainability aspects are only mentioned by 60% of interviewed companies. Corporate Social Responsibility very often is on the management agenda but real action and consequences in business are still on a low level.
In the emerging markets supply chain management is focused on profitability as well. Regarding the top perfomers of the survey almost no difference between industrialized and developping countries can be recognized. In fact a small performance gap in terms of deliverability and inventory turnover rate still exists but the management efforts in both markets are already comparable.
PwC's survey considered 500 global operating companies from automotive, engineering, chemical, pharmaceutical and trade sector.
