Logistics TOP 100

One week ago the Fraunhofer Institute for Supply Chain Services in Nuremberg published in cooperation with Deutsche Verkehrs-Zeitung and Bundesvereinigung Logistik an updated study of the one hundred best german logistics provider regarding their turnover in the business year 2011. Non-surprising first place is taken by Deutsche Post DHL with an annual turnover of approx. 8.1bil Euro. Compared to logistics provider worldwide DHL is in the first place as well, followed by UPS and Fed Ex.  In total the german logistics market volume slightly increased up to a record result of 223bil Euro.

The logistics market is dominated by transport (44%) and warehouse (26%) activities whereas order processing (6%) and logistics planning (4%) represent a quite unimportant part. These figures are a bit surprising for me as I expected supply chain planning to have high management attention especially in global operating companies like DHL or UPS. Usually these companies are the first to recognize the enormeous cost and environmental saving potential of well structured supply chains. I was wondering the expenditures in developing efficient supply chain networks remain on such a low level.

As I already mentioned in former posts environmental consequences of global logistics networks attract management attention in these companies as customers develop an increased environmental awareness. It will be interesting to observe future development of these figures.
